Kennecott Mines Mill Town

The Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark is located 4 miles from the town of McCarthy at the toe of the Kennicott Glacier and icefall. There are many hikes and historic buildings to explore.

Into the mountains

The town of McCarthy and the Kennecott Mill Town are deep into the Wrangell Mountains. The Kennicott Glacier with its massive icefall tower above the towns.

The road to get you there - McCarthy Road

Following the route of the old Copper River Railroad bed, this 60 mile long road is an expereince in and of itself. The first 18 miles are chip-sealed with the rest being gravel. Average speed is between 30 and 35 miles and hour. The road has vistas of the Chitina River, seen below, as well as an old railroad tressel with waysides along the route. The NPS has a driving guide for the road.
